Description: This hike will be led as an interpretive hike with several talking points, so please come prepared for pauses, a slower-paced day, and to be educated about the stills around Stone Mountain State Park. Here you will learn about the interpretive history of the foothills of North Carolina and the stirring story of those "outlaws" who carved their way through a recession, fighting tooth and claw to survive by moonshine and thunder. We will begin our hike at the Horse Trail parking area near Longbottom Rd and make our way up along several tributaries of the Big Sandy Creek where we will stop to observe several old stills that were established around the area during the moonshining days. Please come prepared with lunch, a snack, plenty of water and trekking poles are helpful as we will be crossing a few creeks. There will be a social hour held at Angry Troll Brewery in nearby Elkin, NC after the hike so please plan carpools accordingly.
